Carpenter (Skilled Fabric Technician)

Location: Twycross Zoo
Contract Type: PPM & Reactive Maintenance
Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week
Reports To: Facilities Manager

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled, reliable, and proactive Carpenter (Skilled Fabric Technician) to join our FM team at Twycross Zoo. This role involves delivering high-quality building fabric maintenance across both planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive works.

You will carry out a wide variety of carpentry tasks, support small project works, and ensure all maintenance activities are completed safely, efficiently, and to a consistently high standard. The role requires someone who can work independently or as part of a team, with strong craftsmanship and attention to detail.


Key Responsibilities

Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM)

  • Carry out scheduled carpentry and building fabric maintenance.
  • Complete routine compliance checks including:
    • Fire door inspections
    • Fence condition checks
    • Plant room visual checks
    • Water pump visual inspections
    • Weekly fire alarm testing
    • Roof cleaning using SkyVac (training provided)

Reactive Maintenance

  • Respond promptly to reactive repair requests, diagnosing issues and completing repairs efficiently.
  • Undertake a range of carpentry repairs including:
    • Door and frame repairs
    • Lock changes
    • Fencing repairs
    • Minor joinery works
    • General building fabric maintenance

Small Project Works

  • Support and deliver small-scale refurbishment and improvement projects such as:
    • Fencing installations
    • Minor refurbishments
    • Timber structure repairs
    • Property upgrades and general improvement works

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • NVQ Level 2 in Carpentry (minimum)
  • At least 3 years’ experience in carpentry or building maintenance
  • Full, clean UK driving licence
  • High level of craftsmanship and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience using PDA/mobile job management systems

Desirable Training & Certifications

  • MEWP 3a / 3b Licence
  • PASMA Certification
  • L8 Legionella Awareness
  • Fire door survey/inspection training
  • Experience with lock changes and security ironmongery
  • SkyVac roof/gutter cleaning experience
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical/electrical plant room checks
  • Experience supporting minor project work
